宁日照 (吴孟达) 与弟日朗 (张兆辉) 相依为命，肩负父母之职，靠象牙工场维持生计，日常生活得邻居杨晓葵 (商天娥) 照顾，晓葵对日照日久生情。 日朗与好友翁聿修 (罗嘉良) 同在一运输公司任职，两人对新来的女同事谷领弟 (锺淑慧) 均心怀好感，日朗为成全聿修无奈放弃，而领弟实对日朗有意，在朗情绪低落时加以劝慰，感情渐进。 日照得悉晓葵心意後，借机回乡躲避，竟重遇当年梦中情人阮乔 (陈美琪) ，爱火重燃，以真情打动乔并申请其来港结婚，同时亦与父宁元敬及妹日嘉重聚，一家团圆，惜象牙禁运，日照顿血本无归，元敬父子情深替照还债，而阮乔望出外工作以帮家计，与日照产生磨擦，婚事搁置
